A SMART way to help people with addiction in Gippsland

Gippsland PHN are proud to be supporting Gippsland Southern Health Service, Bairnsdale Regional Hospital and Central Gippsland Hospital to deliver SMART (Self Management and Recovery Training) program across Gippsland.

SMART is a free group program assisting with problematic behaviours, including addiction to drug, alcohol, cigarettes, gambling, food, shopping, internet and others.

Guided by trained peers and professionals, anyone from the community can come to help themselves and each other using a variety of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and motivational tools and techniques.

In 2016 Gippsland PHN commissioned a SMART Recovery pilot program with Central Gippsland Health (CGH), with the interest of reducing the harm caused by addiction and offering the Wellington community another recovery treatment option.

CGH conducted an internal evaluation which incorporated use of WEMWBS (Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale), which along with quantitative and qualitative data assisted Gippsland PHN to review the pilot. The program was found to have significant impact in the Wellington community, providing real opportunity to reduce vulnerability, isolation and promote community connectedness.

Based on the successes of the CGH pilot program, Gippsland PHN extended the pilot in 2018 for an additional 12 months and commissioned two new providers to establish SMART groups and achieve a Gippsland-wide model.

Gippsland PHN have targeted the hospital-based withdrawal bed providers in Gippsland, to deliver the program, offering another community-based AOD referral option both pre and post treatment.
