Youth Mental Health in Gippsland

Gippsland PHN is responsible for overseeing contract management of the existing headspace centre in Morwell and the newly established headspace centre in Bairnsdale. headspace centres aim to improve mental health outcomes for young people aged 12-25 years with, or at risk of, mild to moderate mental illness.

headspace Bairnsdale

bairnsdale-headspaceRelationships Australia Victoria are the lead agency for headspace Bairnsdale. The center provides early intervention mental health and wellbeing services to young people in East Gippsland. This includes access to free or low cost and confidential mental, general and sexual health services as well as education and employment, alcohol and other drug support services. The comprehensive suite of services includes therapeutic, financial, drug and alcohol counselling, psychiatric consultations, vocational guidance, help with job seeking and health and wellbeing services for Aboriginal youth. This service has an active Youth Advisory Committee that meets regularly to discuss the service and were active contributors to the initial design of the site, including the artwork featured in the building.

Young people can either contact the service directly or be referred to headspace Bairnsdale by schools or health and community workers. Referrals can be made in writing on the headspace Bairnsdale . headspace Morwell

morwell-headspaceLatrobe Community Health Service are the lead agency for headspace Morwell which provides young people with access to Allied Health Professionals and community supports to assist them to access the assistance they need to develop and maintain the skills and confidence to live healthy and happy lives. headspace Morwell also engages in community awareness and seeks to develop and implement innovative programs to improve the mental health and wellbeing of young people in the Latrobe City with a visiting presence in the Baw Baw Local Government Area.

headspace Morwell have a range of groups on offer including a Youth Reference Group for young people aged 16 to 25 years who want to raise awareness about youth mental health in the community.  The group meets once a month and provides advice on how the service can best support other young people. Other groups offered to young people include a FReeZA Committee focused on youth arts and cultural events, a same sex attracted and gender diverse youth group, and a ‘Make Bake Create’ group focused on supporting young people coming together in a safe and supported environment.
