In response to the April 2015 National Ice Taskforce, established and led by former Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police, Mr Ken Lay APM, Gippsland PHN has been listening to and engaging with all levels of government as well as with the Gippsland community who shared their concerns and ideas during the #TellMaria campaign on how to address the alcohol and drug barriers in Gippsland.

In 2016 the Federal government, as part of a national allocation, provided $800,000 per year to commission new, evidence-based services across Gippsland to help people struggling with addiction to alcohol, ice and other drugs.

Ms Marianne Shearer CEO of Gippsland PHN announced in February 2017 successful contracts with two distinct service providers to work in local areas across Gippsland where gaps in service access had previously been identified:

Alcohol and Drug: Family and Carer Support Service

Australian Community Support Organisation (ACSO) will provide brief, early intervention for families and carers of people who are misusing substances with the aims of providing information and guidance, advocacy and referrals via a solutions focused model. The program You’re Not Alone Family, Friends & Carers Substance Abuse Support (YNA) Service is multifaceted, and a region wide support and education service for families and carers of substance users in the Gippsland region.

Who can access this service?

The service is designed specifically for supporting family, friends and carers through a multi-faceted model of individual, group and peer support.

Program Location

Across Latrobe, Baw Baw, South Gippsland, Wellington and East Gippsland local government areas.

Alcohol and Drug:  Youth Place Based Outreach

Youth Support & Advocacy Service (YSAS)’s Youth Alcohol and Other Drug Outreach Service will provide the delivery of alcohol and drug treatment services to vulnerable young people. YSAS will work closely with the existing community organisations that identify individuals or cohorts of young people with emerging substance use issues.

YSAS will work to help:

  • Improve capacity in youth agencies to recognise and manage alcohol and drug related problems
  • Integrate approaches to service delivery models that meet young peoples’ multiple needs
  • Improve referral pathway
  • Improve capacity in mainstream alcohol and other drug agencies to work with vulnerable young people.

Who can access this service?

The service is designed specifically for vulnerable young people (12-25 years) who require alcohol and drug treatment and support to stabilise, reduce or cease harmful substance use.

Program is available across the local government areas of South Gippsland, Wellington and Bass Coast.

Alcohol and Drug: Breaking the Cycle

Latrobe Community Health Service (LCHS) aims to locate, engage and allow local Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal young people to proceed through a withdrawal episode under professional supervision. After the young person has withdrawn from use, support will be given to minimize influences that may trigger future illicit drug use by

  • Reducing substance use and the harm associated with substance use for Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal young people.
  • Improving the young person’s health, wellbeing and social connectedness
  • Adopting integrated approaches to service delivery

Who can access this service?

Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal Youth (12-24 years)

Program is available across the local government areas of Latrobe and Baw Baw.
