headspace centres in Morwell and Warragul celebrate a milestone this month with the 5th anniversary of their presence in Gippsland.
From its beginnings in 2008 under the former Central West Gippsland Division of General Practice, headspace is now administered by Gippsland Medicare Local (GML).
Acknowledging the milestone on behalf of the GML Board, Chair, Dr Nola Maxfield, said the work of headspace had assisted so many young Gippsland people in this five-year period.
“Since opening the doors in 2008, headspace have been able to assist over 2500 young people throughout the Latrobe and Baw Baw local government areas in a positive youth friendly setting,” Dr Maxfield said.
“headspace is now a very important part of our community and GML is proud of our partnership and the important youth mental health service it provides.”
The two Gippsland-based headspace sites have indeed become a lifeline for many young people according to General Manager Primary Health, Mr Ian Watts.
“The main source of referrals to the headspace hub located at Buckley Street Morwell, and the in-reach Warragul service, is the young people themselves,” Mr Watts said.
“We offer a range of mental health support services to young people aged 12 to 25, their family and friends in collaboration with other youth-focused organisations.
“There is also access to counselling and psychologists, mental health nurses, youth work and medical services which ensures that young people receive the best quality care without having to recount their story at different organisations.
“Through these community partnerships, headspace can offer many group programs, resourcing and information where young people can be involved, stay well and achieve their potential,” Mr Watts concluded.
The anniversary milestone will be celebrated with a sausage sizzle and a birthday cake on Monday 23 September between 1.00pm and 2.00pm at headspace 99 Buckley St Morwell.
