The Time of Dying – Warragul

The GRPCC, GPHN and GRPCCS have partnered together to provide this regional education focusing on end of life issues including voluntary assisted dying and palliative care.

Dr. Melanie Benson, Palliative Care Physician based with the Gippsland Region Palliative Care Consultancy Service, will highlight anticipating and managing the dying phase including: recognition; communication; medication management; and palliative sedation (including the recently developed GRPCC CPG guidelines for the use of palliative sedation that provides a framework for the discussion of this important area of end of life care).

VOLUNTARY ASSISTED DYING
A Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) Care Navigator will discuss voluntary assisted dying and be available to answer any questions. The VAD Care Navigator is a key support role for anyone across Victoria seeking information about voluntary assisted dying or assistance going through
the process.

Learning outcomes include:

  • To improve the skills in diagnosing dying in the palliative care setting.
  • To improve confidence in anticipatory prescribing in the palliative care setting.
  • To improve the understanding and management of the role of palliative sedation.
  • To improve the understanding of voluntary assisted dying
