This course has been designed to increase the capacity of people that provide counselling services to clients that are bereaved by suicide.
This course will NOT provide information about how to support a person that is experiencing suicidal ideation or behaviour.
This workshop is specific to suicide bereavement, however the topics covered are transferrable to bereavement counselling for other area of focus, eg. palliative care or other sudden death
- Loss, grief and bereavement
- Understanding suicide
- Suicide bereavement: unique issues and experiences
- How to support a person bereaved by suicide (eg: trauma, guilt, blame, stigma)
- Special topic of interest: supporting children, young people and families
Dr Louise Flynn has been a psychologist for over 25 years. For the past 17 years she has worked with people bereaved by suicide; for 15 of these years, Dr Flynn has been the manager of Support After Suicide in Melbourne. Her day-to-day work involves counselling and group facilitation with the bereaved as well as administration. Dr Flynn’s PhD explored the experience of participants in an 8-week support group and also described how people bereaved by suicide experience stigma.
