Connecting People to Country through Art

Gippsland Medicare Local (GML) reminds the Gippsland community that entries to the innovative arts initiative, ‘Connection to Country’, are set to close this week – Friday 11 October 2013

‘Connection to Country’, asks all interested Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to depict their connection to a physical, and or spiritual, place throughout Gippsland and the wider Australian community.

Entries for the competition have been strong with 44 entries received so far.  South Gippsland has submitted 13 entries with 18 from Central Gippsland and 13 from East Gippsland while photography has been the most popular artistic medium.

As well as allowing all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to express themselves through the mediums of photography and traditional art, the successful entries will be eligible for $3000 in prizes.  The winning entries will also be displayed in a colourful calendar to be available through Gippsland’s health care providers in the New Year.

The calendar aims to improve and support Aboriginal health through greater awareness of the importance of recording and keeping medical appointments.

The ‘Connection to Country’ photographic and art competition is an initiative of Gippsland Medicare Local and is also supported by the Bendigo Bank.
